The Eastern Pennsylvania Osteoporosis Center was founded in 1996 by Orthopaedic Associates of Bethlehem. Our mission is to fight this disease through community awareness, wellness education and working to achieve early detection in people at risk.
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone density. This leads to bone fragility and increased fracture rates. These fractures have a major impact on quality of life leading to pain, deformity and long term disability for many patients. Today, we have the capabilities to make an impact for these patients prior to fracture and disability. Advances are a result of a better understanding of the spectrum of conditions and medications that may decrease bone density, the ability to accurately measure bone density and FDA approved therapies that have been proven to reduce fracture risk.
Osteoporosis affects one of every two women. Osteoporosis affects over half of women over the age of 50, can begin in some women as early as their 20's, and can also affect men. Associated fractures can cause stooped posture ("humped" back), a loss of mobility, and independence. A woman's risk of hip fracture alone is equal to the combined risk of developing breast, uterine and ovarian cancer – and up to 24% of victims who suffer hip fractures die within one year of the fracture. The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that in the U.S. today, 10 million individuals already have the disease and 18.5 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis.
Early diagnosis can make a difference in your life. With education and early detection we can prevent this disease, halt its progress, and in some cases, even reverse its course. The resources contained on this site will help you learn more about what you can do.
